How much further have you read in the series? After finishing the first six books, book one feels almost like a prologue to the first arc, ending with the sixth book. I think many things become clearer after books two and three, and then four through six give an action packed conclusion to the arc.
I've only read the one so far. But I was planning on at least reading one more book and if I didn't like that, then it's probably likely that I won't care for the series
I thought the second book was a pretty solid step up. It's still kind of an introduction to everything that's going on, but it also introduces my favorite character in the series.
